Getting Started

What Is DIY Difficulty?

Every maintenance task in SeasonKeep includes a DIY difficulty rating to help you decide whether to handle it yourself or hire a contractor. You'll see this rating as a colored badge on the task detail sheet.

The Four Difficulty Levels

Easy (Green)

Tasks that anyone can handle with basic household tools. These usually take under 30 minutes and require no special skills.

Examples:

  • Inspecting and replacing HVAC filters
  • Cleaning dryer lint traps and vents
  • Testing smoke and carbon monoxide detectors
  • Flushing a water heater drain valve

Moderate (Yellow)

Tasks that require some tools, basic know-how, or a bit more time. Most handy homeowners can complete these with the help of a tutorial.

Examples:

  • Caulking around tubs and showers
  • Cleaning gutters
  • Lubricating garage door hardware
  • Touching up exterior paint

Hard (Orange)

Complex tasks that need significant skill, specialized tools, or safety precautions. Consider hiring a professional unless you have experience.

Examples:

  • Servicing an HVAC system
  • Repairing roof shingles
  • Replacing a garbage disposal
  • Cleaning a chimney

Professional Only (Red)

Tasks that should be performed by a licensed professional. These involve safety risks, building code requirements, or specialized equipment that homeowners typically don't have.

Examples:

  • Roof replacement
  • Electrical panel inspection or upgrades
  • HVAC system replacement
  • Septic tank pumping
  • Major plumbing repairs

Cost Estimates

Each task shows two cost estimates side by side:

  • DIY cost — What you'd spend on materials if you do it yourself
  • Professional cost — What a contractor would typically charge, including labor

These estimates are adjusted for your region based on local cost-of-living data, so they reflect realistic prices in your area.

Finding a Contractor

If a task is rated Hard or Professional Only and you'd prefer to hire help, tap the Find a Contractor button on the task detail sheet. SeasonKeep will suggest local contractors who specialize in that type of work. This feature is available on the Home Plan and above.
